About Symposium

The 2022 Tbilisi International Biennale of Stage Design is organized by the Valerian Gunia Union of Young Theatre Artists – OISTAT National Center of Georgia for the fourth time.

It was first launched in 2016 with the participation of four countries – Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and Russia and aims to create conditions for young stage designers to develop professionally, present their creativity and share new ideas; to create a new regional platform for exchange and presentation of information about modern trends and methods of scenography. This unique platform enables young scenographers to present themselves and their projects, review and assess ongoing processes and research in this field of art, share their creative ideas, participate in professional discussions, and plan and develop joint projects.

The Symposium themes: Temporality – Pandemic, War, Theater

This hybrid Symposium is the 4th edition of the Biennale and Symposium. It aims to discuss the broad question of temporality in relation to the theatre in general, as well as in the context of specific crises of recent years, – the Covid-19 pandemic, and the war in Ukraine.

Monday, 10 October 

The first session of the Symposium is entirely devoted to the presentations of Ukrainian participants.

Tuesday, 11 October

The second session relates to theatre and performance architecture and environments and is open to international proposals and participants. Themes include:

  • Impact of the phenomenon of temporality – the alienation of political decision-makers from the authenticity of the urban fabric

– Renovation/reconstruction of historical theaters – necessity and problems.

– The quality and urban incompatibility of new theater buildings.

  • Creative experience – scenic space and atmosphere – architectural structure as a tool
  • Theater during the pandemic – the audience behind the theater architecture – what have we learned?

Wednesday, 12 October

The third session celebrates and shares new, or ‘in-progress’ non-English language publications addressing Scenography, Theatre, Performance Design, Theatre Architecture, and Technology created during or since the pandemic, the war, and in our times of struggle and upheaval.

Authors, editors, and curators of new titles are invited to present their publications and discuss the concepts, processes, and outcomes of their publishing journeys.

The Symposium was organized in collaboration with OISTAT Research Commission and there are presenters from 9 countries taking part in this Symposium under broad themes: Temporality – Pandemic, War, Theater.

The language used is English but all created PowerPoint to make their structure and principal themes more visible. These are shared here as final PDFs along with each speaker’s Photo, Biography, and Abstract.
