INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM AT THE 5TH TBILISI BIENNALE OF STAGE DESIGN “CULTURE AND CRISES”
Impermanence in Reality and Theatre
The Dream of Red Mansions, a famous ancient Chinese literary work, has always been an important subject of contemporary art creation. It uses the fate of a large family to reflect that everything in the world is impermanent. Existence and non-existence, sadness and joy, prosperity and decline are all uncertain and helpless. In the early, middle and late stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in the past years, I happened to be the stage designer for three different versions of the Dream of Red Mansions, including drama, thaditonal opera and ballet. The severe epidemic situation in reality, the always disrupted rehearsal plans, the panic caused by the life crisis, and of course the various uncertainties and anxieties brought about by the stage presentation, have given the Dream of Red Mansions a kind of current significance, allowing us to have a more personal experience of its theme. I tried to review and summarize the creative process that left a deep experience during that extraordinary period with the stage design of the above three different works.
