Platform
Biennale is an ambitious project aiming to become an important international platform for artistic and professional development, intercultural dialogue, mobility of stage designers, which is supporting contacts between representatives of different professions of performing and visual art. It is the platform for demonstrating and discussing new tendencies and processes in the field of scenography. Biennale is the unique platform created for young scenographers enabling them to present themselves and their projects, review and assess the ongoing process taking place in this specific field of art, share their creative ideas, participate in professional discussions, plan and develop joint projects. Recognizing the competitive pressure that young stage designers are experiencing, the Biennale seeks to give participants a worthy opportunity to present their talent and professional skills, to help them gain experience that will serve as an incentive for the future.
History
Tbilisi Biennale of Stage Design was first launched in 2016 with participation of four bordering countries in the Caucasus- Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Russia. In 2018, there were 7 countries participating in the Biennale, and the MasterLab was led by legendary Pamela Howard. At present, the participants of international exhibition are the representatives from USA, Europe, the representatives of 12 Asian countries, and there are the representatives of 11 countries at the symposium.
Structure
Tbilisi International Biennale of Stage Design 2020 In 2020, Tbilisi International Biennale of Stage Design is organized by Valerian Gunia Union of Young Theatre Artists – OISTAT National Center of Georgia, for the third time.
Tbilisi Biennale of Stage Design 2020 will take place on October 18-28, 2020, uniting three main activities:
1. International Exhibition of national and students’ expositions
International exhibition will take place physically at Tbilisi History Museum Karavanserai (8 Sioni street, Tbilisi, Georgia). MasterLab and a Symposium of the Biennale will be held online.
General information
Valerian Gunia Union of Young Theatre Artists – OISTAT National Center of Georgia will hold the 3rd Tbilisi International Biennale of Stage Design on October 18-28, 2020. All participating countries are responsible for settling down organizational, artistic and financial issues related to presentation of their pavilions. Country exhibitions will be organized by the national curators who will be in charge of selecting the participating artists. In 2020, the Biennale will focus on two separate sections of international exhibitions: professional and student’ shows.
International Exhibition of national and students’ expositions International Exhibition of Tbilisi Biennale of Stage Design Consists of the curatorial expositions. Each country has the right to present one pavilion/exposition in each section.
In 2020, as a result of Covid-19 National Pavilions are not divided. Video materials presented by 11 national curators in the professionals’ section are presented in a joint exposition.
Exhibitions of Tbilisi Biennale of Stage Design are broadening thematically. In 2020, we have stage design, theatre photography and architecture presented at the Biennale.
MasterLab – is the realistic and virtual territory for sharing, delivering and updating professional knowledge, information and experience, it presents an opportunity to get acquainted with new professions and new achievements in the field of scenography.
International Scenography Online Symposium is part of the open forum of the Biennale. The symposium is dedicated to the discussion of modern trends in senography and problems in the field of culture caused by Covid-19.

Symposium, which is to take place in the frames of Tbilisi Biennale of Stage Design will focus on the following topics:
Artistic process – The most prominent contemporary trends in scenography of different countries. – How are the current scenography trends reflected at the Prague Quadrennial? – How is COVID 19 influencing and affecting theater and scenography? How does digitization change the creative process?
Pedagogic process – Scenography practitioners and educators on their pedagogic experience. – What is the impact of online education in scenography and performing arts? What are the ways the digital educational methodologies may develop into?
Research process – Current areas of scenography research – Development of contemporary research methodologies on, and involving, scenography.
Format of the symposium Symposium will take place on October 26-28, 2020. Due to the recent global development and restrictions imposed by new regulations regarding COVID-19 it will be exclusively conducted in an online format. It will unite three days of sessions, where each day will be dedicated to a specific listed in the above section. The presentations of the speakers (up to six-seven persons a day, max. 2 hours) will be followed by discussions and Q&A sessions (up to one hour) related to the topics of the day. Each of the speakers will be given 15-20 minutes for presenting of their papers. All papers will be published on the website of the Biennial.
Who can apply
All interested persons (practitioners as well as theoretical researchers) working in the fields of theatre, cinema, television, theatre criticism, multimedia scenography, computer gaming.
Qualifying criteria for participation:
• Working experience: at least 3 years of working experience in the fields of theater, cinema, television or other shows as well as multimedia scenography including computer games.
• The applicants selected by the national curators from the respective countries will be eligible to participate in the Tbilisi Biennale of Stage Design. National curators will be in charge of administration and organizing of expositions of their countries.
